    Local control in fusion systems of p-blocks of finite groups

    AbstractIf p is an odd prime, b a p-block of a finite group G such that SL(2,p) is not involved in NG(Q,e)/CG(Q) for any b-subpair (Q,e), then NG(Z(J(P))) controls b-fusion, where P is a defect group of b. This is a block theoretic analogue of Glauberman's ZJ-Theorem. Several results of general interest about fusion and blocks are also proved

    Little race or gender bias in an experiment of initial review of NIH R01 grant proposals

    Many granting agencies allow reviewers to know the identity of a proposal’s Principal Investigator (PI), which opens the possibility that reviewers discriminate on the basis of PI race and gender. We investigated this experimentally with 48 NIH R01 grant proposals, representing a broad spectrum of NIH-funded science. We modified PI names to create separate White male, White female, Black male, and Black female versions of each proposal, and 412 scientists each submitted initial reviews for three proposals. We find little to no race or gender bias in initial R01 evaluations, and additionally find that any bias that might have been present must be negligible in size. This conclusion was robust to a wide array of statistical model specifications. Pragmatically important bias may be present in other aspects of the granting process, but our evidence suggests that it is not present in the initial round of R01 reviews

    Le modèle républicain d'intégration : implications pour la psychologie des relations entre groupes

    International audienceHistorical and sociological analyses have highlighted the characteristics of the republican model as a specifically French tradition of integration and organization of collective life. However, few research in psychology has examined the perceptions, attitudes or beliefs of individuals with regard to this model. We present the results of several studies that reveal two distinct and orthogonal dimensions structuring the Republican ideology : one related to citizenship and the other related to secularism. Moreover, we show that adherence to Republican principles is not only very high but has important implications for understanding the intergroup perceptions and attitudes of French people, and the acculturation orientations of French immigrants from North Africa.Des analyses historiques et sociologiques ontmis en évidence les caractéristiques du modèle républicain en tant que tradition spécifiquement française d'intégration et d'organisation de la vie collective. Cependant, très peu de recherches en psychologie ont examiné les perceptions, les attitudes ou les croyances des individus à l'égard de ce modèle. Nous présentons les résultats d'une série d'études qui mettent en évidence deux dimensions distinctes et orthogonales structurant l'idéologie républicaine, l'une reliée à la citoyenneté et l'autre reliée à la laïcité. De plus, nous montrons que l'adhésion à ces principes républicains est non seulement très élevée mais qu'elle a des implications importantes pour comprendre les perceptions et les attitudes intergroupes des Français(es), ainsi que les orientations d'acculturation de Français(es) issus de l'immigration maghrébine

    A varved lake sediment record of <sup>10</sup>Be solar activity proxy for the Lateglacial-Holocene transition

    Solar modulated variations in cosmogenic radionuclide production provide both information on past changes in the activity of the Sun and a global synchronization tool. However, to date the use of cosmogenic radionuclides for these applications is almost exclusively based on 10Be records from ice cores and 14C time-series from tree rings, all including archive-specific limitations. We present the first 10Be record from annually laminated (varved) lake sediments for the Lateglacial-Holocene transition from Meerfelder Maar. We quantify environmental influences on the catchment and, consequently, 10Be deposition using a new approach based on regression analyses between our 10Be record and environmental proxy time-series from the same archive. Our analyses suggest that environmental influences contribute to up to 37% of the variability in our 10Be record, but cannot be the main explanation for major 10Be excursions. Corrected for these environmental influences, our 10Be record is interpreted to dominantly reflect changes in solar modulated cosmogenic radionuclide production. The preservation of a solar production signal in 10Be from varved lake sediments highlights the largely unexplored potential of these archives for solar activity reconstruction, as global synchronization tool and, thus, for more robust paleoclimate studies

    Low agreement among reviewers evaluating the same NIH grant applications

    Obtaining grant funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is increasingly competitive, as funding success rates have declined over the past decade. To allocate relatively scarce funds, scientific peer reviewers must differentiate the very best applications from comparatively weaker ones. Despite the importance of this determination, little research has explored how reviewers assign ratings to the applications they review and whether there is consistency in the reviewers’ evaluation of the same application. Replicating all aspects of the NIH peer-review process, we examined 43 individual reviewers’ ratings and written critiques of the same group of 25 NIH grant applications. Results showed no agreement among reviewers regarding the quality of the applications in either their qualitative or quantitative evaluations. Although all reviewers received the same instructions on how to rate applications and format their written critiques, we also found no agreement in how reviewers “translated” a given number of strengths and weaknesses into a numeric rating. It appeared that the outcome of the grant review depended more on the reviewer to whom the grant was assigned than the research proposed in the grant. This research replicates the NIH peer-review process to examine in detail the qualitative and quantitative judgments of different reviewers examining the same application, and our results have broad relevance for scientific grant peer review

    Rapid Mercury(II) Removal by Electrospun Sulfur Copolymers

    Electrospinning was performed with a blend of commercially available poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and a sulfur-rich copolymer based on poly(sulfur-statistical-diisopropenylbenzene), which was synthesized via inverse vulcanization. The polysulfide backbone of sulfur-containing polymers is known to bind mercury from aqueous solutions and can be utilized for recycling water. Increasing the surface area by electrospinning can maximize the effect of binding mercury regarding the rate and maximum uptake. These fibers showed a mercury decrease of more than 98% after a few seconds and a maximum uptake of 440 mg of mercury per gram of electrospun fibers.     New insights into lake responses to rapid climate change : the Younger Dryas in Lake Goscia(z) over dot, central Poland

    The sediment profile from Lake Goscia(z) over dot in central Poland comprises a continuous, seasonally resolved and exceptionally well-preserved archive of the Younger Dryas (YD) climate variation. This provides a unique opportunity for detailed investigation of lake system responses during periods of rapid climate cooling (YD onset) and warming (YD termination). The new varve record of Lake Goscia(z) over dot presented here spans 1662 years from the late Allerod (AL) to the early Preboreal (PB). Microscopic varve counting provides an independent chronology with a YD duration of 1149+14/-22 years, which confirms previous results of 1140 +/- 40 years. We link stable oxygen isotopes and chironomid-based air temperature reconstructions with the response of various geochemical and varve microfacies proxies especially focusing on the onset and termination of the YD. Cooling at the YD onset lasted similar to 180 years, which is about a century longer than the terminal warming that was completed in similar to 70 years. During the AL/YD transition, environmental proxy data lagged the onset of cooling by similar to 90 years and revealed an increase of lake productivity and internal lake re-suspension as well as slightly higher detrital sediment input. In contrast, rapid warming and environmental changes during the YD/PB transition occurred simultaneously. However, initial changes such as declining diatom deposition and detrital input occurred already a few centuries before the rapid warming at the YD/PB transition. These environmental changes likely reflect a gradual increase in summer air temperatures already during the YD. Our data indicate complex and differing environmental responses to the major climate changes related to the YD, which involve different proxy sensitivities and threshold processes.Peer reviewe
